LG posts January security bulletin ahead of Google with Android and LG-specific patches

lg g5

Google has been releasing monthly security patches like clockwork ever since it revamped the Android security model in the wake of Stage Fright. Samsung and LG are also trying to keep up with the monthly patches, but not always with the most success. LG's getting the jump on Google today, though. It has posted the January security bulletin a little early with information on Google and LG-specific patches.

You can check LG's security page for the full list or patches (under the LG Security Bulletin tab).

Qualcomm and Meizu settle patent dispute amicably, no hard feelings

After months of fighting and court battles, including filings in China and multiple other countries, it seems that Qualcomm and Meizu, the Chinese phone manufacturer, have settled their dispute over patents. According to a press release from Qualcomm, the two have come to an agreement regarding Meizu's use of technology that Qualcomm said violated its patents.

Specifically, Qualcomm has granted Meizu a royalty-bearing license to develop, manufacture and sell devices that Qualcomm has patents on: CDMA2000, WCDMA, and 4G LTE mobile modems.

Samsung is wrapping up Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Nougat beta test, official release scheduled for January

Back in November, Samsung started beta testing the Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Since then, it has rolled out several updates to squash bugs and answer feedback, but it looks like the beta test is now over. The Beta Program team posted a notice to those who were participating saying that it will end on December 30 at 24:00 (so December 31 at 00:00).

The notice was spotted by several users so it seems that the program is wrapping up for everyone. Perhaps the most exciting piece of news in that message though is the line saying, "We would do our best to distribute the official version in January as soon as possible." So it looks like we're approaching the official release of Nougat for everyone, not just beta testers who happen to live in specific countries.

News are all around us nowadays but quality news reporting that also happens to be fast and accurate is not easy to come by. Breaking News, a separate startup inside NBC News Digital Network, was one of the most popular and respected news aggregators that tried to solve that problem through a team of dedicated editors and a network of trusted partners. It then broadcast important news through its website, various social networks (@BreakingNews with >9M followers, +BreakingNews, and Breaking News on Facebook) as well as mobile apps including an Android app with over 500,000 installs.

Direct carrier billing starts going live for Airtel and Vodafone postpaid customers in India

Users in India have a couple of options when purchasing content from Google Play: credit or debit cards, gift cards, the newly added Netbanking payment method, and direct carrier billing on Idea. But more alternatives are on the way for customers of Airtel and Vodafone.

The news was actually announced in October at the Google Playtime event in India and was tweeted by attendees at the presentation. Over the past couple of weeks, users have started seeing the option pop up in their payment methods on the Play Store.

ADW Launcher 2 leaves beta with discounted premium unlock for a limited time, users disgruntled by the change

ADW Launcher was one of my first introductions into Android customization. For the longest time, it was the cornerstone of my homescreen strategy and I'd spend hours perfecting a setup with icons, colors, widgets, until I'd start again a couple of days later. Heck, one of the first Android roundups I ever wrote (warning: not an AP post) was about customization and had ADW Launcher as the first recommendation.

But then Lollipop came and ADW looked completely out of place with the more modern interface.
